5 Ways to Update with a Fall Colour Palette

5 ways to update with a fall colour palette

Fall is the perfect time for a mini makeover. Canadians head indoors to hibernate. And with holiday entertaining just around the corner, any fall decor updates you start now will be enjoyed for many months to come.

Want an easy, high impact change? Think: new hues. Use a rich fall colour palette to create a warm, welcoming space. Neutrals like chocolate brown go ever so nicely with earthy pumpkin, ochre, rust and deep red. Here are five ways to update your home with these fab fall colours.

wall to wall drapes, fall colour

1. Make a big impact with drapery

Aside from a feature wall, few things pack as big a decor punch as wall-to-wall draperies. Imagine a floor-to-ceiling expanse of elegant brown velvet. Or extra thick silk in an aged bronze tone. Or a woven tapestry of spice tones. Talk about an instant fall update! Bonus: heavier drapes improve the energy efficiency of your home by boosting insulation and cutting drafts.

2. Soften the space with mega cushions

Switch out your cushion covers. Buh-bye nautical themes and summer ticking. Undertake a fall update that’s as tactile as it is visual, by choosing sumptuous velvet, satin, and chenille cushion covers in deep spice, wine and burnished metal hues, the perfect fall colours for any home.

3. Start a warming trend with throws

We love throws! They’re the failsafe way to accessorize your sofa for each new season—just drape one casually across the sofa back, or fold it over an arm, to add colour, pattern and texture. Want an on-trend throw for your living space? Consider a cozy knitted Merino wool throw, or a heritage wool utility blanket, or a luxe faux-fur in one of your fave fall colours.

4. Create a vibrant welcome with a front-door wreath

Set the tone early… like at your front door! Hang a fall wreath that complements the fall colours of the great outdoors. Look for autumn leaf, harvest wheat or other seasonal themes.

5. Reinforce the fall colour palette with accessories

Look for little ways to add hits of fall colour:

  • A table centerpiece with orange and yellow gourds and autumn flowers;
  • A candlescape of naturally scented soy votives in deep autumn shades (aubergine and brown tend to look more sophisticated than candy-corn orange soy);
  • Bowls of nuts in their shells;
  • Tea towels and table linens;
  • Or, our favourite: a big wooden bowl filled to the brim (not for long) with Halloween candy!
