Goodbye Old Man’s Cabin, HELLLOOO Snow Cottage Lifestyle: Exploring the Latest and the Coolest in Winter Vacation Home Trends

The beauty and lure of the Canadian winter is calling! Adventure seekers from across Canada and the world are flocking to their favourite winter spots to enjoy the glory of our winter wonderland… and when they are finally ready to come back in, the winter cottage is the place to go! But gone are the days of the boring old wood cabin… today’s winter cottage is a wonderland of it’s own. Here are our design team’s tips for a well-designed winter home.

Trust in the Light – The whole point of going to the cottage, is to enjoy all that nature has to offer… so unblock the windows, frame the light with generous curtains and choose bright colours to welcome every view your cottage has to offer. During the day you’ll crave the sunshine and at night you’ll be able to enjoy crystal-clear winter skies. It is also a good idea to incorporate some large-sized (dare we wish for oversized?) mirrors where possible, to help get the most out of the short winter days.

Embrace the plush surfaces – Winter needs cozy and that’s no secret. But did you know that cozy can also be custom-designed and personalized to your every specification? Every plush (or the ones you wish were plush) surface in your home can be fabricated, detailed and fitted by expert upholsterers to best suit your design vision. Throw pillows, ottomans, pet bedding, bay window sitting nooks, bedding wear and structures, furniture skirts, and even unique architectural features! That is great news for all the exhausted adventure-seekers finding their way to your winter getaway.

Incorporate winter patterns, but not the clichés – there is more to winter than Santa, poinsettia and pine greens… winter is also delicate, brimming with its own glorious colour palette and a rich range of its own inspiring patterns. In the modern cottage, almost all of the world’s top fabric, detailing and wallpaper design houses are shedding ‘traditional’ winter designs, for more naturally inspired patterns and palettes. The choices are literary endless! Pick, choose and coordinate layer textures and complementary patterns for the most sumptuous effects.
