Who: Hunt Slonem is an American Neo-Expressionist artist, painter, sculptor and printmaker whose body of work has taken our breath away. Having grown up in Hawaii and studied for a time in Nicaragua, Slonem expresses a deep connection and empathy to biodiversity in all its form. Today, the artist’s New York City home and art studio function as aviaries, with several hundred birds in and out of cages at any given time, as he surrounds himself with the world he seeks to create thought his art. Over the past 30 years, the natural motifs Slonem explored in his early works have been reduced to their essence and have become recurring themes – birds, butterflies, tortoises, orchid prints and other patterns inspired by the most vibrant natural schemes.
What: In his paintings, Slonem works with methodically arranged, layered and ‘uncovered’ brushstrokes to texture and add an unmistakable sense of depth that beckon the audience for their undivided attention. In his textile work, similar effects are achieved in the artist’s plush fabric prints that layer woven embroidery and rich velvet applique of vibrant colors and remarkable patterns. In his most recent collection, Slonem’s signature themes have evolved into a visually stunning collection of wallpaper and fabric prints that captures his fascination with natural motifs through repetition and vibrant color.
Standout: Feature walls dressed in Slonem’s impressive, exquisite prints is one of our favorite ways to make an artistic statement in any space. A signature feature of Slonem’s NYC studio is the Bunny Wall, a large expanse of salon-style groupings of the artist’s bunny paintings – a signature style that has inspired similar style groupings in museums and private collections. Using a trompe l’oeil technique – artistic technique that creates an three dimensional optical illusion using realistic imagery – Slomen’s wall papers mimic the effect of the frames paintings with a seamless series of patterns, unframed and multiplied against solid backgrounds. We have to admit, the Bunny wallpapers are our favorite!
