Ribbon borders or details

Solid-hued fabric ribbon introduces a strong linear element to drapery. This tends to reinforce a more formal look, whether the ribbon in question is satin, velvet or preppie grosgrain.

Formality isn’t always the net effect though: novelty embroidered ribbons add playful use of pattern to nursery room shades or in a child’s bedroom.

Trims and braids

A bit wider and more heavyweight than ribbon, embroidered fabric trim adds an emphatic visual and textural element to the edge of a curtain or blind, giving it a striking formal, “finished” appearance. We love how the Greek key trim on these curtains emphasizes the room’s enviably tall dimensions.

Braids can be used similarly, though they tend to be narrower in design.

Piping

Although it’s better known for its use on soft furnishings like throw pillows and bed linens, piping cord is a fantastic drapery trim design idea. It lends a tailored, less-is-more effect to custom Roman shades and valances.

Tassel fringe

Tassel fringe tends to maintain more of a traditional look: here it adds Old World charm to a cornice or a skinny-mini valance.

Pom poms, ball trim and tassel fringe

The curious thing about pom pom and ball fringe is that it adds a quirky touch to both formal and casual interiors. Not a lot of trims are that versatile!
