18 Jun Picking the right custom blackout shades
Need custom blackout shades or drapes for your condo or bedroom to help you sleep more soundly? Want to reduce sound from the street? National Drapery offers a range of light-blocking shades and fabrics for the right amount of room darkness. But with so many options, deciding what room darkening shades to buy can be challenging. Drapes? Roller? Cellular? Cordless? Dark-coloured or white blackout shades?
Darkness is key to getting a good night’s sleep. Darkness sends a critical signal to the body that it is time to rest. Light exposure at the wrong times alters the body’s internal “sleep clock”—the biological mechanism that regulates sleep-wake cycles—in many ways that interfere with both quantity and quality of sleep.
While every blackout window treatment we carry provides some level of light control, some room darkening shades and drapes offer more benefits than others. A key consideration is fabric type and colour. Sheer fabrics typically soften and filter sunlight, while semi-opaque and opaque fabrics almost completely block it. If you want to block out as much natural light as possible, look for fabrics and treatments with maximum light-blocking qualities that are uniquely designed to minimize light gaps and seams.
Another option for blocking light is a room-darkening liner, which is available on many of our window shades and drapes. The liner can be sewn directly into the face fabric, or for ultimate flexibility, may be able to operate independently.
You can also achieve complete room darkening with the Hunter Douglas Duette LightLock™ system, which features patent-pending light control technology that absorbs light, preventing it from entering the room:
